In 1965, this unique car, driven by the future five-time Formula 1 champion Juan Manuel Fangio, who won the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix, was donated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, USA. However, to add to the collection and restoration fund, the museum management decided to put the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen up for auction in Stuttgart. It was eventually sold at a Sotheby’s auction for €51.2 mln and became the world’s most expensive race car. The name of the buyer was not disclosed.
