One of Rome’s most iconic attractions is already swamped with tourists, making it challenging to get close. And it’s only going to get more difficult. City officials are planning to limit access to the fountain. To marvel at this Baroque masterpiece, which rakes in about €1.5 million in tourist coins annually, visitors will need to reserve a spot and time in advance, and possibly purchase an entry ticket. The fee, however, would be nominal — no more than one or two euros. Rome’s residents will be exempt from the fee. In preparation for the Vatican’s jubilee year in 2025, the fountain is slated for restoration and cleaning. The authorities are allocating nearly €330,000 for this entire project.
