A unique Rococo masterpiece, the Chinese Palace, has reopened in the Oranienbaum Palace and Park Ensemble after 20 years of restoration. Built between 1762 and 1768 by Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi as the Empress’s personal residence, this architectural gem now welcomes visitors once again. Only a select circle of close confidants and important figures were granted access to Catherine’s beloved mansion. The true crown jewel of the palace is the Spangle-work cabinet, which has preserved its authentic 1760s decor. The walls of this remarkable room are adorned with twelve intricate glass bead panels. These complex compositions feature fantastical birds, exotic plants, and fluttering butterflies — all meticulously crafted by skilled Russian embroiderers. The exquisite panels are set within lavish carved and gilded frames.
